Travel Like a Local - Sardinia Northeast

Updated: Jul 15

I am very excited that many of you are going to join me in Marinella, Sardinia, for a yoga retreat. Our villa is located in a small seaside village called Marinella, where you will find white sandy shallow beaches and an abundance of wildlife! There are a couple of turtles wandering around near the national park, and occasionally you may see some wild boars visiting. If you are lucky, you might spot flamingos flying overhead!

Olbia

The nearest airport is Olbia Airport. Not far from the airport, you will find the coastal city of Olbia, which has plenty of restaurants, bars, farmer's markets, and a nearby harbor. If you have time, I highly recommend wandering around Olbia. The city center is close to the airport, where you will find the most delicious gelato at, Gelateria Da Brivido 100%naturale. Everything is made fresh with the best natural ingredients! We were lucky to find the shop just before it opened and had a little chat with the owner. She explained that all the gelato is made by her, and she spends a lot of time studying and sourcing the best ingredients from their origins. For instance, her pistachios are imported from Sicily, which produces the best pistachios in the country! As we were chatting, a massive queue quickly formed outside her shop within just 5 minutes!

From Olbia, you can take a direct train to Marinella, which takes about 45 minutes and costs £1.69. You can check tickets on The Trainline or Rail Europe. It also takes about 45 minutes by taxi, which costs around €70-80 one way.

Marinella

Near our villa, there is a little shallow beach where a baby turtle was spotted by one of our attendees last year! Additionally, an older turtle apparently lives in the Parco Nazionale dell'Asinara, which is just behind our villa. There is also a wildlife park, Cala Marana, down the road where you will find a couple of turtles hanging about.

If you want to take a proper sea dip, Spiaggia di Marinella is about a 20-minute walk from our villa. It's a beautiful white sandy beach with clear turquoise waters.

Cala Sabina

2 kilometers away on the east side, you will find a little hidden gem of a beach tucked away behind a train track, definitely worth visiting! It's about a 30-minute walk or a 15-minute taxi ride. At Cala Sabina Beach Club, you can enjoy some food and drinks amidst beautiful crystal-clear waters. I could have spent hours in that water! It's a shallow blue flag sandy beach.

Bike Rentals

If you'd like to hire a bike during your retreat, here are the companies you can contact:

Last time I spoke to Orange Bay Bikes, they had only 2 bikes remaining! Please get in touch with them if you wish to hire one.

Golfo Aranci

Golfo Aranci is a fishing village nearby, just a 10-minute drive down the road or about 1 hour by train. In Golfo Aranci, you will find a delightful selection of bars and restaurants. One lovely local restaurant we've spotted is Rosso Venexiano, where you can enjoy home-cooked, authentic local dishes.

Spiaggia di Cala Moresca

If you decide to spend some extra time in Golfo Aranci, I highly recommend hiring a bike and cycling down to Cala Moresca. There, you will find crystal-clear, inviting waters and a beach sheltered from the wind. Along the way, you'll discover many secret hidden beaches. It's definitely one of the best beaches I have ever visited in Sardinia.

Sardinia is such a beautiful gem with abundance of wildlife, and also it's a place that we learn to slow down and appreciate the simple floavours of life in a meaningful and mindful way. I look forward to practicing with you at our Sardinia Yoga Retreat soon. 💙
